Fëanor created the three Silmarils, like gem in form, holding the light of the Trees. As with all things great and wondrous, the Silmarils caught the eye of Melkor. He doubled his efforts to disperse lies and rumours among the Noldor, causing them to distrust the Valar and one another; he then taught them to make weapons. Fëanor became overprotective of the Silmarils, and grew paranoid and jealous of others. In an attempt to address the unrest and the lies, Finwë summoned a council. Fëanor encouraged rebellion, Fingolfin spoke against it, and Fëanor took that as proof of Fingolfin's rumoured (though nonexistent) plot to usurp the throne. Fëanor threatened Fingolfin at swordpoint, and the Valar called council. Because of Fëanor's behaviour, he was sentenced to 12 years exile from Tirion. Fingolfin forgives his half brother and is desirous of reconciliation. Finwë departs with Fëanor, and Fingolfin ends up with the crown, by no design of his own.As a result of the councils of Finwë and the Valar, it became clear that Melkor was the cause of many problems, but he fled before he could be brought to justice.
First of all, Fëanor is being a brat. However, despite what I just said, I still hold to my opinion that some of what Fëanor does is justifiable, and most of it is understandable and should not be tossed off lightly as 'naughty naughty'. Some of what he does is, of course, a result of a vindictive nature which we can all self-righteously complain about if we like.
As a further disclaimer, I am not endorsing Fëanor's actions, I am merely saying that I refuse to have him discounted as a 'bad guy'.
Anyhow, what were we talking about? Oh yes, Silmarils.
"But not until the End, when Fëanor shall return who perished ere the Sun was made, and sits now in the Halls of Awaiting and comes no more among his kin; not until the Sun passes and the Moon falls, shall it be known of what substance they were made."
By some art unknown (save perhaps to Varda) Fëanor filled these 'gems' with the light of the Trees of Valinor.
As he became obsessed with Arda in its beauty, so Melkor's mind was now filled with lust for the Silmarils.
"Ever Melkor found some ears that would heed him, and some tongues that would enlarge what they had heard; and his lies passed from friend to friend, as secrets of which the knowledge proves the teller wise. Bitterly did the Noldor atone for the folly of their open ears in the days that followed after."
The main of Melkor's lies concerned the Valar. He filled the heads of the Elve's with thoughts of the power they should and could wield if they were not under the thumb of the Valar. He told them that their freedom was a sham, and that they were only being kept out of Middle-earth so that another race (men) might rule it.
Melkor also spread rumours that Fingolfin was plotting to take the kingship of the Noldor from Fëanor.
Here we come to two points concerning Fëanor.
First, it is interesting to note that though Fëanor ever hated Melkor, yet he was greatly influenced by him, and brought many of his schemes to pass. Fëanor never listened to Melkor, but he always heard him, and then his own mind took credit for the poison which filled it. Later, when Fëanor sees what he believes to be Fingolfin trying to undermine him, he says "even as I guessed", when in reality, all those ideas about Fingolfin were put there by Melkor. Fëanor was the perfect soil for the lies of the dark lord; he so refused the idea that he could be in any way influenced by Melkor, that he had to make his unpleasant thoughts come out of his own head, a more reliable source. If he had simply acknowledged that Melkor had tricked him, and that he had to be more careful, things might have gone differently.
Second, Manwë pretty much does nothing this entire time. Fëanor (though his own talk did as much or more damage than that of Melkor) saw his people divided and confused and angry. What he sees, is that Manwë wrongly freed Melkor, and then did nothing to keep him in check; let him loose among the Noldor to do as he pleased. Manwë's 'perfect' Aman, in which Míriel dies and Melkor walks freely.....is it anything but natural for Fëanor to dislike Manwë. Then later, with the destruction of the trees, it can once more be blamed on the Valar's lack of vigilance. Fëanor, despite everything, really has quite a case against Manwë.
Moving on. Finwë summons his lords to council.
"For Fëanor now began openly to speak words of rebellion against the Valar, crying aloud that he would depart from Valinor back to the world without, and would deliver the Noldor from thraldom, if they would follow him."
Fingolfin asks Finwë to 'talk some sense' into their wayward relation, and Fëanor enters the council, fully armed. He orders Fingolfin to leave, accusing him of trying to turn their father against him, and follows him to the door.
"...and the point of his bright sword he set against Fingolfin's breast. 'See, half-brother!' he said. 'This is sharper than thy tongue. Try but once more to usurp my place and the love of my father, and maybe it will rid the Noldor of one who seeks to be the master of thralls.'"
This was (finally) a step too far, and Fëanor, as well as others among the Noldor, were summoned before Manwê.
"Then at last the root was laid bare, and the malice of Melkor revealed ... But Fëanor was not held guiltless, for he it was that had broken the peace of Valinor and drawn his sword upon his kinsman; and Mandos said to him: 'Thou speakest of thraldom. If thraldom it be, thou canst not escape it; for Manwë is King of Arda, and not Aman only. And this deed was unlawful, whether in Aman or not in Aman. Therefore this doom is now made: for twelve years thou shalt leave Tirion ... But after that time this matter shall be set in peace and held redressed, if others will release thee.'
Then Fingolfin said: 'I will release my brother'."
Bear in mind that 12 years is the blink of an eye for elves. This sentence is ridiculously light, but Fëanor, proud as he is, stalks off to Formenos with his family to sulk, hiding the Silmarils with him.
"Thither also came Finwë the King, because of the love that bore to Fëanor; and Fingolfin ruled the Noldor in Tirion. Thus the lies of Melkor were made true in seeming, though Fëanor by his own deeds had brought this thing to pass".
Melkor, knowing he was discovered, fled and was not brought to justice (another thing for Fëanor to add to his 'reasons why Manwë is lame' list), he instead went to Fëanor, to offer his "assistance", but the door was quite literally slammed in his face.
So off went Melkor, and off went Fëanor, and off went peace and the days when people weren't constantly being killed.
Wave goodbye to those wonderful days, and get your handkerchiefs out. From now on, the book is full of sad sad sad things, and the many good things are so beautiful that they are even harder to read.

Fëanor with silmaril by steamey: https://steamey.deviantart.com/

PART ONE: there is such a social contagion cult against Feanor that some people rant like serial killers of how they hate Tolkien for not making Feanor be tortured forever...they detail how they wish God or Eru would let them do it. Sick stuff & some people say, Tolkien had to be a very evil man with no morals to not send Feanor to eternal bondage, and to let Maglor raise the twins and for the twins to love him back. ...Without context the brilliance and compassion of Tolkien is lost and things seem evil. All facts about Feanor are swept under the censorship rug and Morgoth level gaslighting takes over.....Tolkien had pity and empathy since only Feanor suffered and from childhood then lifetime depression and PTSD plus guilt too, as one who was born but his mother died: giving birth to his Valar like soul....Fingolfin and Galadriel had childhoods of comfort and ease ...Of all children only Feanor suffered and he had to live with a Valar like Fea..Easy tasks to the minds of those who don't have to bear this...Also Tolkien states the 3 strands of hair thing was evil of Galadriel...and he adored her but stated she was cruel to Feanor, who only wanted to honor her..likely in making the Silmarils...what if he had given up ...He was hurt...Tolkien says she , the gentlest judger dropped the ball on the one who most needed compassion.and harshly judged Feanor because she failed to see the shadow of Morgoth in her own heart TOO and the other Noldor like everyone's saint the perfect Fingolfin...Also Fingolfin did INDEED try to get his father to drop Feanor...and not love him anymore...he repented later but he did damage. he knew how horrible it was for Feanor to lose a mother that he mourned every day....Something Fingolfin knew and never himself had faced....it was nasty !! Feanor forgave him ...everyone leaves this fact out or lessons had good it was for Feanor to accept the apology. The worst hell for a child is worrying their other parent will die too or leave or not love them. In the end Tolkien with all the Elves blame the father for remarrying ....Instead of helping to heal his son first...He understood some of that himself and always stayed with Feanor...He was angry at the Valar for falsely blaming Feanor and stayed with him ...that's why he was not at the party Feanir was invited to...He was upset that his son was puniushed..In the end he stayed with Feanor in the Halls...till he healed and came out of the Halls at the renewing of all things ie the Peaceable Kingdom. The father had wanted the mother back of course ...why though?... to get her pregnant again ...SHE gave birth to a soul so great, she could nit bear the thought...not all the Valar put together could make 1 Silmaril he made 3 ..using his own soul and Mandose declared them akin to living beings ! Hardly some gems..Only Eru could give life...These were far greater than the Dwarves made but niot given life by an Angel...& Feanor would die if he broke them...Varda declared them sacred...Mandose said the fate of the WORLD would be their fate....If they were destroyed so would be the Earth and Valinor !!...Feanior was not just possesing them greedily...So Feanor protected them alright,,,indeed they would have gotten into Morgoths hands if he gave them to Manwe: Manwe was totally gaslit..but Feanor gets blamed when he was the only one to see through MELKOR ie THE VALAR did not but Tulkas did not blame Feanor. Spoiled brat??....Feanor had the world on his shoulders while others partied...He helped Yavannah and Nienna: He saved the lights almost dying doing it. Then Morgoth plots for everyone to hate Feanor & they start to...Just what Morgoth wanted...people reading fall for it as though alive with Miorgoth in their heads...Feanor did not think Morgoth's thoughts were his own TOLKIEN SAID EVERYONE DID...NOT JUST HIM...BUT HE SECIOND GUESSED THOSE THOYUGHTS NO ONE ELSE DID... EVEN THE VALAR AND ALL THE NOLDOR THOUGHT MORGIOTHS THOUGHTS CREEPING IBNTO THEIR MINDS...WERE INDEEDTHEIUR OWN ..ONCE AGAIN ONLY FEANOR IS BLAMED.
ReplyDeletePART TWO:....THE EVER SAINTLY PERFECT FINGOLFIN lol...had this done to him too...& he never suffered emotional mental torture since the day he was born AND he was not Morgoth's main target...this is why Tolkien uses Eru to blame his Valar in the end not Feanor...And gives Feanor the greatest reception with everyone embracing him ...no one got out ofvthe Halls if they did not see their own wrongs/ learn their own lessons/ and forgive and even understand Feanor...Eru wanted that for Feanor as did his Angels ...who had the biggest lesson to learn..Feanor did not bring ruin to Middle Earth but actually saved it...He did wrong but it was understandable ...you are the only one to say so however mild..and he did not bring the fall of the Valar: they were responsible for it all. The Holy Valar were the ones responsible...no one expects that curve ball....and there is your complexity so many say Tolkien lacks...then they hate him for that complexity...He can't win...Compassion and empathy, indeed brains and mercy make it clear that while it was very wrong to disobey the Angels....and swear the evil oath, had he not the Earth would have been destroyed and the childrebn of Eru destroyed..THAT IS MASSIVE..they failed to trust in Eru and simply do what he asked PROTECT my children. Feanor started to do that. The Valar brought their own downfall by dropping the ball...only Morgoth came. Tolkien says it is thr most tragic part of his tales !
ReplyDeletePART FOUR: ONLY MORGOTH EVEN CAME WHEN HUMANS AWOKE ! Feanior could not give the stones to the Valar with even Manwe totally gaslit..and if he broke the gems he would die....With critical thjoyght and compassion Tolkien makes it clkear that wrong as Feanor was it was understandable AND how COULD he be expected to trust...Morgoth told him they were trying to steal the stones and not help the earth and even if that was a lie, they were gaslit and Morgoth could talk them into giving him the gems. THERE IT IS the catch 22....but Feanor gets blamed when he was the only one to see through MELKOR ie THE VALAR did not but Tulkas did not blame Feanor. Spoiled brat??....Feanor had the world pressing down on his shoulders: While the Valar unwittingly did everything as Morgoth wanted...Yes Feanor was out of his mind ...His mind broke and that soul he was born with burned like flame....Morgoth played with fire....Also his father was butchered and the sacred stones stolen: The stones were connected to the fate of the damn world! Plus his father was slaughtered by Morgoth for no reason but to hurt Feanor...Did you ever have that happen to your loved one...I did...find them that way and come back to tell me how well your mind handled that. Any of you. But people judge saying THEY would never fall to Satans words..such braggart self-righteous fools are always the first to fall...their very self-righteousness is the biggest flaw...AND even Manwe and everyone fell...Feanor was tortured most but held up best in retrospect & saw into his mind when no Valar could...slammed the door on him. While he was blamed for what free Morgoth did to everyone...Even Turin killed the lame Brandir in his state of realizing what Morgoth did to his family...I understand Feanor begging the Teleri but losing it...and I adore the Telerin ALSO:Dwarves killed their own as traitors if they would not help under less situations...We forgive them ..Thorin tried to kill innocent people/ elves .over a stone ...truly just a gem...no matter how heartfelt...Never was sorry or said so about the Elves...His people slaughtered them for a Silmaril then lied about why the elves got revenge on those who slaughtered them ..and killed elves again...but Feanor is the devil? You did better than most indeed but Feanor is always getting a cold shot and Fingolfin hailed so much ...people even say he could fight and Feanor could not ! He fought every Balrog at once: they COULD beat Morgoth together as they beat off Ungoliant when Morgoth could not. Tolkien calls him the mightiest elf in all ways of body and mind...strength valor endurance etc....He married the only female elf thought unpretty and loved her all the more when others said she was beneath him and counselled him to not marry her... Add true love to his heart...fans judge him for getting mad at her etc but never do they mention that IN HIS RIGHT MIND he loved her when no one would and he was the most beautiful elf says Tolkien...He then took only her council to snub their snobbery but people say he lorded around yelling at Galadriel for her hair and even...get ready. brace yourself: ...BEING UP TO INCEST ON HER AS HER UNCLE !!!!!....This is so far from the Elves and anything Tolkien ever wrote about Feanor that it is disgusting. ...His pride did not mean cruelty...FAR FROM ...his pride was like Turgon ...believing things better than they were like when Turgon thought Morgoth could never get in even if he found Gondolin...It was pride like Turin as well, even Boromir, but not evil...ie Turgon's warriors up against Morgoth's whole army: the thought made Turgon believe he could beat Morgoth ..yes it was pride .it did not mean cruelty...And Feanor once tells Manwe, through his herald, that he may due trying to stop Morgoth but at least he is doing something. Tolkien said the herald bowed to him, answered in full..
ReplyDeleteLOL THIS WAS LONG SO I HAD TO BREAK IT UP...I slipped up ...please ignore that there is no part three...it goes from 2 to 4
