Pelennor Is Taken

March 13 3019 TA

Frodo is captured by the orcs of Cirith Ungol

Sam wounds Shelob, and puts on the Ring when he hears Orcs coming.

"The world changed, and a single moment of time was filled with an hour of thought. At once he was aware that hearing was sharpened while sight was dimmed, but otherwise than in Shelob's lair. All things about him now were not dark but vague; while he himself was there in a grey hazy worlds, alone, like a small black solid rock, and the Ring, weighing down his left hand, was like an orb of hot gold. He did not feel invisible at all, but horribly and uniquely visible; and he knew that somewhere an Eye was searching for him."

The Pelennor is overrun

A final retreat is made from the river, turned into a rout, and Denethor finally sends out a sortie to help them reach the citadel. 

"And then a trumpet rang from the Citadel, and Denethor at last released a sortie. Drawn up within the shadow of the Gate and under the looming walls outside they had waited for his signal: all the mounted men that were left in the City. Now they sprang forward, formed, quickened to a gallop, and charged with a great shout. And from the walls an answering shout went up; for foremost on the field rode the swan-knights of Dol Amroth with their Prince and his blue banner at their hear.'Amroth for Gondor!' they cried. 'Amroth to Faramir!'Like thunder they broke upon the enemy on either flank of the retreat; but one rider outran them all, swift as the wind in the grass: Shadowfax bore him, shining, unveiled once more, a light starting from his upraised hand."

Dol Amroth was cut out of the movie, which made me quite sad, but not angry. And Gandalf is able to make the Nazgul leave, since the Witch King had not yet arrived, and it was his job to challenge Gandalf.

They ride back to the gates, bearing a wounded Faramir.

"Last of all he came. His men passed in. The mounted knights returned, and at their rear the banner of Dol Amroth, and the Prince. And in his arms before him on his horse he bore the body of his kinsman, Faramir son of Denethor, found upon the stricken field."

Did I mention that I love the Prince of Dol Amroth? His daughter, Lothiriel later married Eomer, and their son Elfwine the Fair became King of Gondor afterwards.

Hello Moria

THE DAY

On January 13th 3019, in the early hours of the day, the company is attacked by wolves. And by nightfall, they have reached the gates of Moria. At this point, Gollum begins to follow them.

THE YEAR

In the year 2991, Eomer of Rohan was born. And we all love Eomer. His helmet is AWESOME by the way.
For those of you who don't know, Eomer married Lothiriel, Daughter of Imrahil of Dol Amroth.

The Journey Begins

DAY: The Company of the Ring leaves Rivendell at dusk. 

On December 25th, in the year 3018, nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring set out from Rivendell on their perilous quest. Yes, this is Cristmas day, or Yule as the hobbits call it. As in the case of Christmas, the saviour (or saviours in this case) of the world have begun the journey.

THE YEAR: 2988 TA

This was the year that Finduilas died. She was the wife of Denethor, Steward of Gondor. And the mother of Faramir and Boromir. She probably died because she had to be married to a jerk like Denethor. That must have been really horrible *shudders*

 

WEDDING OF DENETHOR AND FINDUILAS!!

In the year 2976 TA, Denethor son of Ecthelion married Finduilas of Dol Amroth. And I must say, Denethor was portrayed rather well in the movie by John Noble, however, his manner was different than the book. Denethor was a lot more polite and measured in the book, but in the movie, he was much too nasty and in front of guests too. In fact, the whole movie relationship between Denethor and Faramir was off. Possibly because Faramir was completely messed up in the movie. I mean, utterly messed up. In the book, Faramir basically takes one look at the ring and declares that he would not pick it up if it lay by the wayside, or something to that effect, but in the movie, he takes the poor hobbits prisoners and drags them all the way into Osgiliath.
But this is supposed to be about Denethor and Finduilas. In the movie Dol Amroth is nonexistent. I do not recall that is was mentioned even once. But in the books, the prince of Dol Amroth aids in the Battle for Minas Tirith. Aids a lot, he is actually a fairly important figure in the book. Related by marriage to the House of Stewards and all that.
Well anyway, that is the YEAR for this post, now lets see what happened on September 29th in the War of the Ring.

On September 29th 3018 TA, Frodo and the Hobbits reached Bree at night. Which means that this is also the fateful day on which they met Aragorn son of Arathorn. And were almost killed by the Black Riders. Other than that, not much happens on September 29th. I declare this day to be Butterburr day, in honor of poor dear Barliman.
